If you have selected a range of lines (holding down the shift key when selecting), is there a way to deselect only one item from the group of selected items?

I thought that the control key would do this, but it doesn't! Once a group of items is selected, holding the control button down and clicking on an item just selects that one item and deselects the entire group that was previously selected.
