Ssh access for administration ubuntu

Have a. Ubuntu server running wingftp enterprise. Am not able to establish a regular ssh connection to the Ubuntu server for admin purposes (cli access). I can connect to server with sftp, but does not help me with administration. I have set up ssh access to linux servers before and know how to modify sshd config file to allow root access via ssh. No dice with wingftp running. It seems to have taken over the sshd server. Am I missing something simple?

Yes, maybe Wing FTP Server takes the port 22, so you can modify the SFTP port under "Domain -> Settings -> Listeners".

But if I change the listening port to something else, all my clients will have to modify their client settings. Can I just modify the sshd config file on Ubuntu to use a port other than 22, or will that hose WingFTP?

Just edit the file "/etc/ssh/sshd_config", if you want to use port 2222, add a line on the bottom: Port 2222
And then restart the sshd service.
